چکیده

This chapter reviews important recent papers related to catch-up growth. Catch-up growth is generally defined as body growth that (1) is more rapid than normal for age and (2) follows a period of growth inhibition. As can be seen by the studies reviewed in this chapter, catch-up growth can occur after either preor postnatal growth inhibition, can show a variety of temporal patterns, and can be either complete (yielding a normal adult body size) or incomplete. These studies explore the implications of catchup growth not only for adult body size but also for pubertal timing, bone strength, and the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Measuring catch-up growth in malnourished populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIM Numerous recent studies measure catch-up growth by regressing adult or pre-adolescent height on early childhood height. Using simple statistical theory and data from a healthy and well-nourished population, this paper shows that these tests are uninformative about the extent of catch-up growth. The study also provides new empirical evidence on pubertal catch-up growth using l...

Is Early Puberty Triggered by Catch-Up Growth Following Undernutrition?

Undernutrition during fetal and postnatal life is still a major problem in many low- and middle-income countries. Even in high-income countries malnutrition may exist in cases of intrauterine growth retardation, as well as in chronic conditions such as anorexia nervosa and inflammatory bowel disease. Children adopted from developing countries are often chronically malnourished. Nutritional reha...

Impact of fetal and neonatal malnutrition on the onset of puberty and associated noncommunicable disease risks

BACKGROUND Fetal and neonatal malnutrition impacts the timing of the onset of puberty. The timing of puberty onset has been shown to be a rough indicator of noncommunicable disease (NCD) risk. Recent advances in understanding the various inter-related neurochemical and genetic controls underpinning puberty onset have shed new light on these interesting and important phenomena. These studies hav...

Growth and childhood asthma.

Height and weight were measured every six months in a long term prospective study of 66 children with chronic perennial asthma for a mean 13.1 years. There was no evidence of growth retardation on entry into the study. Growth developed along normal lines in all 66 children until about 10 years, and in 35 of these children growth continued along normal lines throughout the whole period of follow...

Growth after gut resection for Crohn's disease.

Seventeen children underwent 19 bowel resections as part of their management of Crohn's disease. Thirteen children had evidence of retardation of linear growth preoperatively, of whom 12 exhibited catch up growth, crossing at least one centile band, after resection. Seven of the 12 showed early signs of puberty at the time of resection and one child was regarded as being fully pubertal. All chi...
